About us

Chairman’s introductions

As chairman of the British Georgian Society, and on behalf of our Patron, and the board of Directors, it is my pleasure to welcome you to our Website.

The British Georgian Society was founded in June 2004 and launched on 13 July 2004 at the Lanesborough Hotel in London. President Mikheil Saakashvili addressed the launch and agreed to act as Patron of the Society. The celebrated popular singer, Katie Melua, sang a song welcoming the Society’s birth.

The Society is a continuation of the original Georgian Society set up in the early 1920s by Sir Oliver Wardrop, Britain’s then Chief Commissioner in Tbilisi. It is now established as a private limited company in England and Wales.

The Society serves as an umbrella for a wide variety of Georgian-related events in the UK, and raises funds for humanitarian projects in Georgia. It organizes Members dinners, seminars, talks and charity fund-raising opportunities, as well as providing a central source of information on Georgia-related events across the UK. Membership is open to all. The Society also acts as a networking centre for those interested in Georgian affairs.

We work in close collaboration with the Embassy of Georgia, and are thankful for the support provided by Ambassador Amiran Kavadze.

We run a programme of events which reflects the broad scope of our aims. Details of future and past events are provided on our events page. We aim to cater for a wide range of tastes, ages and backgrounds, and are particularly keen to welcome young people and students to become Members (see membership page details).
